About one-third of holiday sales typically take place in these final 10 days of shopping, according to research firm ShopperTrak, so the stakes are usually high this time of year. With storms holding down sales last week in Minnesota and across the Midwest and Northeast, those stakes might be even higher this season.

David Brennan, retail specialist at the University of St. Thomas, said the last weekend of Christmas shopping draws a different crowd than earlier times. "If you look, it's disproportionately male," he said.

"This will be a wild weekend," Brennan added. "It'll be very strong in terms of sales. But this snow is going to create some real traffic problems and parking problems for these big centers, and the smart shoppers are going to get out there very early."
