K.L. Johnson, Ph.D., teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in business. Before joining the Opus College of Business, he taught management and entrepreneurship at the Baylor University Hankamer School of Business in Texas. His teaching philosophy is that education should change one's behavior. As an educator, Johnson respectfully engages students in professional, interactive and challenging learning environments, using a variety of pedagogical methods, including business simulations covering situations ranging from ethical issues to corporate decision making. Overall, his goal is to prepare undergraduates to begin corporate careers and to challenge graduate students to refine their business understanding and critical thinking skills in order to enhance their careers and become highly-principled leaders.

Johnson's research interests include corporate entrepreneurship, business strategy, new venture development and innovation. Specifically, his research focuses on the design and performance of internal corporate ventures and the efforts of established business executives to internally develop new businesses through the pursuit of markets, technologies, products or services that are relatively new to the company. He has written for the Star Tribune and been interviewed on KWBU National Public Radio as well as by local newspapers for his research.

In addition to co-authoring two book chapters in Handbook of Entrepreneurial Dynamics: The Process of Business Creation by Sage Publications, Johnson is published in Journal of Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Journal of Small Business Management and New England Journal of Entrepreneurship. Certified in the fundamentals of engineering, he is a recipient of a GE Fund Future Faculty Fellowship and Consortium of Graduate Management Fellowship, a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and is profiled in Who's Who in America(r) and Chancellor's List(r). He was nominated for the Sauvain/Panschar Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2004; the Julie Hayes Teaching Award in 2013; the Susan Heckler Research Excellence Award in 2013; and, as a member of the Academy of Management, received recognition for valuable contributions to the outstanding reviewing committee.

Combined with his experience as a former business development specialist, in which he managed due diligence teams, Johnson has provided consulting services to a variety of startups since 2005 and has been a member of the Round Table Group (a consortia of consulting experts) since 2009. He currently serves as an editorial board member of the Journal of Business Theory and Practice.

This course is designed to introduce students to the complexities of working within organizations, regardless of whether it is a for-profit, non-profit, or governmental organization. Certain complexities are common across organizations, irrespective of their goals or size. Understanding these complexities is critical to becoming an effective member of any organization, and this course will develop students' understanding and expertise in leading and managing themselves and others within organizations. Description of course Strategic Management : CRN: 42978
This course examines organizational issues from an integrative perspective. It draws on concepts from the entire business curriculum to view the organization as a whole. The focus of the course is to have you view the organization from the perspective of the president, rather than that of a manager of a particular function (e.g., VP of marketing). It examines the development of core competence and a sustainable competitive advantage as part of an organization's strategic planning process. Offered each semester. Prerequisite: OPMT 310, FINC 321, MGMT 305, MKTG 300, BETH 301, and senior standing. Absolutely no exceptions will be made to these prerequisites.
