Before joining the Opus College of Business, Kevin L. Johnson taught management and entrepreneurship at the Baylor University Hankamer School of Business in Texas. He teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses. His basic teaching philosophy is that education should change one's behavior. As a teacher, Johnson seeks to respectfully and professionally engage students in a productive, interactive and challenging learning environment. He uses a variety of pedagogical methods, including business simulations with situations ranging from ethical issues to corporate decision-making. Overall, he prepares undergraduates to begin corporate careers, while his goal for graduate students is to challenge and refine their business understanding in order to enhance their careers and make them better leaders.

Johnson's research interests include corporate entrepreneurship, business strategy, and new venture innovation. Specifically, his research focuses on the design and performance of internal corporate ventures and the efforts of established business executives to internally develop new businesses through the pursuit of markets, technologies, products or services that are relatively new to the company.

He has been interviewed on KWBU National Public Radio as well as by local newspapers for his research. In addition to co-authoring two book chapters in the Handbook of Entrepreneurial Dynamics: The Process of Business Creation by Sage Publications, Johnson has published in the Journal of Small Business and Entrepreneurship, the Journal of Small Business Management and the New England Journal of Entrepreneurship.

Johnson is certified in the Fundamentals of Engineering, a recipient of a GE Fund Future Faculty Fellowship and Consortium of Graduate Management Fellowship, a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and is profiled in Who's Who in America(r) and the Chancellor's List(r), which honors achievement for both students and teachers. He was nominated for the Sauvain/Panschar Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2004; and, as a member of the Academy of Management, has received recognition for valuable contributions to the outstanding reviewing committee.

Combined with his experience as a former business development specialist, Johnson has provided consulting services to startups since 2005 and been a member of the Round Table Group (a consortia of consulting experts) since 2009. He currently serves as an editorial board member of the Journal of Business Theory and Practice (JBTP).

This course is designed to introduce students to the complexities of working within organizations, regardless of whether it is a for-profit, non-profit, or governmental organization. Certain complexities are common across organizations, irrespective of their goals or size. Understanding these complexities is critical to becoming an effective member of any organization, and this course will develop students' understanding and expertise in leading and managing themselves and others within organizations. Description of course Strategic Management : CRN: 42978
This course examines organizational issues from an integrative perspective. It draws on concepts from the entire business curriculum to view the organization as a whole. The focus of the course is to have you view the organization from the perspective of the president, rather than that of a manager of a particular function (e.g., VP of marketing). It examines the development of core competence and a sustainable competitive advantage as part of an organization's strategic planning process. Offered each semester. Prerequisite: OPMT 310, FINC 321, MGMT 305, MKTG 300, BETH 301, and senior standing. Absolutely no exceptions will be made to these prerequisites.
