The Opus College of Business Intersections series returns with two engaging events beginning on April 17 with a conversation between Craig Herkert, former CEO of SUPERVALU, and Pat Hedberg, Ph.D., professor of Management at the Opus College of Business.

Craig Herkert

Formerly CEO, president and vice president of distribution and services S.A. for SUPERVALU, Craig Herkert is a consultant providing retail expertise to a variety of clients worldwide.

Herkert’s expertise in the retail industry in the U.S., Latin America and Canada led to sales and earnings growth for the world’s largest retailer during his tenure as president and CEO at Wal-Mart. Focused on providing shareholder value, he enables technology in order to gather collective knowledge and experience and improve operating results. Herkert believes the keys to his impact can be found in seven key leadership principles developed over his career:

  • Create focus and synergy around the business imperative;
  • Bring diverse people, opinions and experts to the business;
  • Encourage a culture of challenge and open dialogue;
  • Enable technology as a driver of innovation and strategy;
  • Embed expectations of accountability and results in the culture;
  • Improve shareholder value; and
  • Model good corporate citizenship.

Herkert is a member of the Board of the Council of the Americas. He graduated from St. Francis College with a bachelor's degree in marketing and holds an M.B.A. from Northern Illinois University in Dekalb.

Pat Hedberg, Ph.D.

Associate Professor and Department Chair, Management

In addition to her role as a professor in the UST MBA programs and the undergraduate leadership and management concentration, Hedberg is the inaugural 3M Professor in Residence, consulting with 3M on their leadership development programs.

Her consulting and research activities include leading with integrity, managerial reflection, reflective learning and group development. She has published on ways in which family business leaders can use ethics and values to create a sustainable business culture. Her most recent work with family business involved exploring the power dynamics of co-preneurial couples. She also has examined managerial reflection, focusing on how to create reflection in the management classroom as well as exploring how managers create space to process and gain perspective in the midst of complicated action.

Hedberg’s teaching interests include leadership, management and organizational behavior with an emphasis on self-development, team dynamics, power and influence, and networking and relationships. She is an active presenter in many professional development programs on the topics of change management, organizational behavior and organizational ethics.

Hedberg earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from Ohio Northern University, and a Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology from the University of Minnesota.

6 - 7 p.m.: Discussion and Q&A session with featured speakers

Admission is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required.
