Global Challenges in Business & Corporate Responsibility

In celebration of the Center for Ethical Business Culture (CEBC)’s 35th anniversary and the 20th Annual Stakeholder Dialogue, we invite you to a conversation with Klaus Leisinger, chairman of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development. Leisinger will share his thoughts on the challenges of expanding a business in a competitive global economy while addressing pervasive and complex social and ethical issues.

Leisinger’s keynote address will be followed by reflections from a panel including Michael Balay, vice president of strategy and business development at Cargill, and Bradley Buck, senior director of operations and corporate engagement for Land O’Lakes International Development. The dialogue will be moderated by Ron James, CEBC president and CEO.

Returning to themes of corporate responsibility and meeting societal challenges is particularly appropriate during the 35th anniversary of CEBC’s founding. In 1978 Minnesota business leaders, who for many years had committed their leadership talents and company resources to addressing community issues, established the Minnesota Project on Corporate Responsibility to develop and sustain this capacity and commitment among future generations of corporate managers and leaders. This program signals our continued pursuit of the vision shaped by our founders.

About the Speaker and Panelists

Klaus Leisinger is chairman of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development (NSFD) and has led the foundation for more than 30 years. He is special advisor to the chairman and CEO of Novartis and advisor to key international organizations, including the UN Global Compact, the World Bank and the World Economic Forum. Novartis and NSFD have been leaders in tackling health, poverty and social issues globally in nations both rich and poor. Switzerland-based Novartis, with $56 billion in sales in 2012, pursues a mission “to discover, develop and successfully market innovative products to prevent and cure diseases, to ease suffering and to enhance the quality of life.”

Michael Balay is vice president, Strategy & Business Development Department. As head of Global Strategy at Cargill, he focuses on long range corporate strategy, commodity trading, financial trading, risk management and organizational design. He has responsibility for strategy doctrine and planning processes. His particular interests are in the structure and behavior of complex adaptive systems, strategic choice under conditions of uncertainty and the role of time in strategy. Cargill is an international producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial and industrial products and services. Founded in 1865, Cargill is a privately held company, employs 142,000 people in 65 countries and recorded $133.9 billion in sales and other revenues in 2012.

Bradley Buck is senior director of operations and corporate engagement for Land O’Lakes International Development. His work focuses on designing and managing agriculture and agribusiness development programs in Africa and Asia. He also served as chief of party on a USAID-funded dairy sector development program implemented by Land O’Lakes in Uganda and as a deputy regional director for Africa based in Nairobi, Kenya. Land O’Lakes is a member-owned cooperative with approximately 9,000 employees, 3,200 direct producer-members and 1,000 member-cooperatives serving more than 300,000 agricultural producers. The company handles 12 billion pounds of milk annually, produces dairy foods products and does business in all 50 states and more than 50 countries.
