Opus College of Business

Full-time UST MBA

Meet Michele Reis

"After working for eight years ... I didn't think I had much new to learn. I was wrong. After one year in the UST MBA program I am a different professional."

Before attending the University of St. Thomas, I earned my bachelors degree in business administration at Centro Universitário de BrasíliaUni in Brazil. I continued to work for my family business, first as an administrative assistant, then as a supervisor and buying manager for nine clothing and accessories retail stores. I also worked as a sales representative for the Brazilian shoe manufacturer Cellsoft for six years and as a customer service agent for Varig Brazilian Airlines.

Although I was born in Brazil I acquired most of my primary education while living in Adelaide, Australia, for four years and in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, for three years. I've traveled to Tahiti, Japan, Argentina, Chile, Spain, Portugal and France, but I decided that, to be a better business person, I needed additional knowledge and the M.B.A. was the appropriate path to take.

The University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business was different from other schools: They emphasized ethics in the workplace. I was communicated with personally and my needs were responded to promptly. When I visited campus to attend a finance class I witnessed first-hand the small and personal classes. The teachers knew the students and the quality of the classes was exceptional. St. Thomas prepares you for high-level management internationally.

My classmates and I have learned to approach economic problems using practical business strategies. Through our leadership labs we've also developed new techniques to leading. Each person has strengths and success comes when we leverage our team's abilities to do well.

After working for eight years and growing up in a family business, I didn't think I had much new to learn. I was wrong. After one year in the Full-time UST MBA program I became a different professional. I have learned about corporate culture and, economic statistics and discovered that marketing is much more than advertising. I've run a company and consulted for a Fortune 500 Medical company in the Twin Cities. I am also wiser and have a deeper understanding of relevant business practices. With my M.B.A. from the University of St. Thomas and internship experience at Hershey, I am applying what I have learned in my new current role.
