J-Term Trip to Berlin is an Amazing Experience for Students
Article and Photo submitted by Laura Kalies
In February 2008, the UST MBA class of 2009 experienced Dr. Heino Beckmann for the first time in Finance 600. While our initial reaction was fear, we grew to adore Dr. Beckmann and appreciated his ability to command the classroom and make us think. This is why many of us rushed at the chance to learn from Dr. Beckmann once again, this time in Berlin, Germany. Eight Full-time UST MBAs and nineteen Evening UST MBAs were lucky enough to get in to the BUSN 714 class held in Berlin. According to Dr. Beckmann, after the first day he could no longer tell who was full-time and who was part-time. Our group bonded immediately, which added to the experience.

UST Women Participate in NAWMBA Case Competition
In October 2008, five UST women represented St. Thomas in a national marketing case competition at the National Association of Women MBAs national conference in Stamford, CT.
Eleana Johnson, Laura Kalies, Sophie Liu, Emily Peick and Anne Tonolli placed in the top nine out of 25 teams and beat out teams from many top schools, including Georgetown (last year's winner). The overall winner of the competition was the University of Maryland.
This team is the first from UST to compete in a marketing competition at a national conference or job fair. Dean Puto said of the team, "this is a wonderful and significant achievement for you and for our MBA program; you and your team gave us extraordinarily great exposure and positioned us well for the future. Thank you and congratulations!"

Life After B School: Courtney Clark
It has been six months since I graduated from the UST MBA program and my career has taken an unexpected turn within that short time. In April I received and accepted a job offer with Miller Brewing Company in a regional sales office in Irvine, California, otherwise know as "The OC." Immediately after graduation in May, I packed up my apartment in downtown Minneapolis and drove back to my home state of California to start my job as a chain sales analyst in one of the most exciting CPG industries - the beer business. From the beginning, I loved the relaxed culture and perks that included professional sports tickets, special events and daily happy hours.

Full-time UST MBA Student Association Elections
On February 17, 2009, the Full-time UST MBA Student Association held their annual elections. Moderated by current Student Association president Christopher Cook, self-nominated candidates were given a few minutes to present their "platform" speech. After the conclusion of the final candidate's speech, the floor was open to current students, faculty and staff for questions. As Dean Puto commented, the Student Association elections represent "a period of transition of leadership from one cohort to the next. I am very proud of this class and the opportunities that lay ahead for our community."
The 2009-2010 Student Association officers are:
- President: Nicholas Sweere
- VP of Communications: Colleen Jackson
- VP of Ethics: Brian Slattery
- VP of External Relations: Brandt Uthus
- VP of Finance: Jace Senske

Five Full-time UST MBA teams presented on the "U.S. Citizen Bank (A)" case, which introduces individuals to the business and ethical challenges that confront an organization that is a major issuer of credit cards to college students.
Executives from leading Twin Cities companies and University of St. Thomas expert faculty joined together to evaluate and select a winning team.
