The Value of an M.B.A.: Growing demands, growing rewards
By Bill Woodson
As recently as 20 years ago, young college graduates entering the workforce were confident of their abilities to compete for and secure jobs offering both attractive starting wages and long-term prospects for advancement. Those days are over. Today we live and work in a fiercely competitive global market where new players have emerged, and long-entrenched advantages have narrowed, if not disappeared. Something about this new, global landscape seems to be linked to the increasing value that employers in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors alike place in the management education credential best known by its three letter acronym – the M.B.A.

The Bottom Line: I Have an M.B.A.
By Dan Cohen '08 M.B.A.
I have an M.B.A. from St. Thomas. Was it worth it? Am I a better person? A better businessman? Has the extent to which I will be successful in my life and career been permanently altered as a result of the last two years?

Fall Admissions Update
By Mary Lindberg
November signals an end of admissions travel and ushers in our first wave of applications for fall 2009. A graduate fair in Grand Forks, ND, a two-week recruiting trip to Asia and a trip to the National Black Student Union Conference and Graduate Study Forum close out a travel period that has included career and graduate school fairs, conferences, panel presentations and informational sessions. Recruiting events have taken the admissions staff to several states and nine countries.
Fresh off of a productive travel season, the admissions office is focusing on the rapidly approaching December 15 application deadline. With applications up over a third from this time last year, DeAnn Kautzmann will be relying heavily upon our student ambassadors to assist with interviews and meet with prospective students. These interactions are particularly valuable as they help applicants assess if the Full-time UST MBA is the best fit for furthering their careers.
This year the application fee is waived to students who apply online by December 15. Please share this information with your network and those who are considering our program.

Finding a Corporate Culture Fit

Newcomers to the job market make two significant false assumptions:

- Any large company paying a sizable salary is likely to be a good fit for someone with an M.B.A.
What these newcomers fail to realize is that their own personality, communication style, values, ethics and expectations ultimately need to fit with the culture of the corporation where they work.
