A New Way to Network

By Miles Levy

The first University of St. Thomas MBA Speed Networking event was held on Tuesday, March 25. The event received a very positive response from participating students and alumni.

The Speed Networking event matched 12 students with 12 alumni for the evening. The participants were separated into two primary tracks of interest: finance/general management and marketing. The alumni pool included a wide array of positions, companies and experience. Students were given five minutes of one-on-one conversation with each alum, as well as two minutes to part ways, exchange contact information and move to the next table.

The most common positive feedback from participants was that the nature of the event allowed for networking conversations to be started easily and comfortably. The alumni participants were equally impressed with the ease of conversation at the event, and many commented that their interactions with students were much more comfortable and candid than in typical networking settings.

A second Speed Networking event is planned for fall 2008 with the goal of increasing the number of student and alumni participants as well as increasing the number of elective tracks represented.
