General Mills VP Inspires UST Women

By Laura Kalies

When Eleana Johnson indicated that Ann Simonds expressed an interested in speaking with a small group of women prior to her marketing presentation, we knew it was an offer that National Association of Women MBA's (NAWMBA) could not refuse. Ann offered a great perspective on career choices, negotiation strategies and work-life balance. Ann reminded the group to "stand for something or you'll fall for anything".

Ann also discussed the various opportunities available to women at General Mills, including leadership retreats and training/development geared specifically for women. Sometimes men will ask why women have these separate events. The reason is that women face different choices about career and family and approach negotiations differently than men. It is helpful for women to have a safe venue to discuss these issues. Ann noted that at General Mills, key decision makers, including men, are invited to parts of these retreats, and they find the feedback and learning from these events tremendously valuable.

The message behind sharing opportunities at General Mills was to remind the group that it is perfectly acceptable to ask companies about their various leadership initiatives to determine if they promote an environment that is in line with what is important to women as individuals. Ann was full of energy and optimism and provided a great reminder, as we interview for internships and rediscover our career paths, that it not only is ok but necessary to step back and examine what is important and what trade offs we are willing to make while choosing our career paths and companies to intern or work for.
