UST Second-Years Complete Mayo Scholars Program

By Amelia Anderson

On March 11 and 12, six second-years from the Full-time UST MBA Program completed the Mayo Scholars Program. The program is a partnership between Mayo Medical Ventures, Medtronic Foundation, and the Minnesota Private College Council, developed by John Meslow, retired divisional president at Medtronic. The Mayo Scholars Program combines undergraduate science and business students with MBA student project leaders to research feasibility and market potential of medical inventions.

Amelia Anderson, Dan Cohen, Aaron Halbe, David Haukaas, Anne Henseler and Cara Lindgren served as project managers from October 2007 through March 2008. Their projects ranged from a new type of finger splint to the cutting-edge technology of tissue engineering. At the two-day "Presentation Day" event, teams presented explanations of the technology, potential applications and markets, competitive analyses, ethical considerations, go/no go recommendations and some initial marketing strategy ideas. Overall, the Mayo licensing managers and other stakeholders seemed pleased with the recommendations and plan to implement many of the teams' suggestions.

This is a great opportunity for second-year students to gain project and team management experience. If you are interested in participating, please watch for information at the beginning of the 2008–09 academic year.
