MBA Tips

MBA Tip #1: Who Needs an MBA?

An MBA is not for everyone, and it is important to think about your own personal goals. With a large price tag and a serious time commitment, it is not an easy decision to make. There are specific career goals you should have in mind before committing, but there are some general things that most MBA students will find they have in common.

According to Hobson's MBA Central, "People in middle management could benefit from an MBA, and people in upper management need an MBA because they need to think strategically and that's something they may not be trained for in their career. Hospitals, law firms, and services businesses are all hiring candidates with MBAs; but an excellent lawyer or physician doesn't necessarily make an excellent manager - it doesn't mean you can manage that group of people. MBA students generally just know that they want to lead people. It involves a leadership role in any industry or any context. The important things are managing people and being able to lead an organization."

Whatever the benefits are to you, know that earning an MBA is a decision not to be taken lightly, but with the right education and the right attitude, the sky is the limit!

MBA Tip #2: Choosing an MBA School - Factors to Consider

Your decision to get an MBA is an important one. You want to get it right. Here are some factors to consider when pursuing your MBA.

  • Consider Mission - does the mission of the institution align with your personal beliefs and values?
  • Size - do you prefer small or larger sizes?
  • Length of the program - how long will it take you to complete your MBA? Is a full-time traditional day program or a part-time program best suited for you?
  • Emphasis on teaching - does the program have the electives, concentrations, or areas of interest to you?
  • Curriculum - does the program have the electives, concentrations, or areas of interest to you?

As you research and visit schools, you will learn more about your own needs. By asking yourself the questions listed above, you're refining your criteria regarding which schools are best for you. The most important criteria will depend upon your specific needs!
