Innovation in Health Care Delivery
Health Care UST MBA Workshop Series
October 16, 2008
Innovation is alive and well in health care delivery. While the presidential candidates debated the merits of their policy proposals and experts questioned the feasibility of large-scale health care reform, health care leaders and entrepreneurs have increasingly moved forward with non-governmental solutions designed to tackle the challenges of our health care system.
This workshop focused on three examples of innovative trends in health care aimed at lowering costs, improving quality and re-focusing efforts on preventive medicine. While the ideas may not be new, the application to today's health care environment requires an innovative approach.

This book is about operations management and the strategic implementation of programs, techniques and tools for reducing costs and improving quality. It not only covers the basics of operations management, but also explains how operations and process improvement relate to contemporary healthcare trends such as evidence-based medicine and pay-for-performance.
It provides an in depth explanation and demonstration of process improvement tools, techniques and programs, including Six Sigma, the Lean enterprise and simulation. It applies performance improvement tools to supply chain management, scheduling and other health care issues.

The University of St. Thomas’ Physician Leadership College is an 18-month program that trains physicians in leadership and management. It was started in 1999 in response to calls from within the health care industry for more training of physician leaders to guide reform efforts. This article makes the case that physicians need to not only participate in but also to lead change in health care. It also describes the program and reports findings from participants’ evaluations.
Physicians, Leading and Dialogue, Duncan Holloman and Brian Campion, Group Practice Journal, June 2007, pp20 - 23.

Effective physician leaders modify their style from "command and control" to collaboration - understanding that the way forward resides in collective action. Key elements of dialogue are compared and contrasted with physician training and the practice environment.
