The MN Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Center for Health & Medical Affairs at the University of St. Thomas’ Opus College of Business present:

The Changing Roles of Physicians and Nurses

Although the focus of health care reform has been on the restructuring and expansion of the health insurance system, a more significant change is occurring in the delivery of care. The need to reorganize care delivery to provide higher quality service at lower costs requires changes in the roles of all health care providers, but most intensely for doctors and nurses.

Some of these new organizational approaches include the health care home, bundled payments for inpatient care, the Accountable Care Organization and its requirement for effective chronic disease management and an overarching focus on improved health and preventive care. All of these new structures require enhanced teamwork, increased communication and new methods for patient engagement.

Many have stated that “culture will trump strategy every time.” How can leaders help ensure that the beliefs, behaviors and decision making patterns—the culture—of their organizations will support these new, team-focused strategies? This panel presentation will provide an overview of how the new environment is driving change in roles and culture, the obstacles to change and examples of what the future may hold.
