Meet Becky Cahn

"The UST MBC program provided me with perspective about the entire communications field....Yet it also emphasized the business knowledge necessary for a management-level position in the corporate world."

Before beginning my graduate degree I was a technical writer working on a contract basis. At 23, I didn’t know what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, but I did know that whatever I decided to do would require a graduate level degree.

I called a fellow alumna from my undergraduate program working in the same field and she recommended the U of M and the UST MBC program. I looked into both and decided UST was a better fit for me because I prefer a practical education over a theoretical-based education. I also liked that ethics and values were ingrained in the UST culture and curriculum. In addition, UST had a very positive reputation with working adults and emphasized working in teams to achieve results.

The UST MBC program provided me with perspective about the entire communications field: public relations, internal communication, writing, speaking, executive communications, etc. Yet it also emphasized the business knowledge necessary for a management-level position in the corporate world. And I made lasting friendships that have been great networking resources through the years.

While completing my thesis in summer and fall 2000, I applied for the corporate communication manager job at Donaldson Company, was hired for that role in August 2000 and received my Master of Business Communication degree in December 2000.

As corporate communications manager, my responsibilities include communication planning and implementation, senior management counseling, corporate brand strategy, consulting across business lines, crisis communications and media relations. Without the UST MBC degree, I would have never achieved this great position. I’m so glad that I pursued the higher level degree when I did.
