Jenny Le, Phillips Scholar, receives Rotary Grant, has opportunity for UST students

Jenny Le, a junior majoring in sociology and advertising, is one of six Phillips Scholars in Minnesota who will design and implement summer programs to address important social issues. Phillips Scholars receive a $14,000 scholarship to encourage their lifelong commitment to community service.

Le has developed an after-school program for Lincoln International High School, a school for immigrant and refugee youth in Minneapolis, to focus on improving the students' English-language skills.

This program has openings for interested St. Thomas students to participate as teacher-mentors, an opportunity that will fulfill Business 200 requirements and provide experience for students in education, English, psychology, sociology and other related disciplines. The program will run from mid-June through July. Volunteers may choose two days (Monday through Thursday) to go to Lincoln and work with the students for approximately one to one and a half hours each visit.

The Rotary Club of Edina is supporting her project with a $500 grant to provide dictionaries and other necessary supplies. The Rotary Club has partnered with Lincoln School on other literacy-related projects in the past.
