Professional notes
- Dr. Catherine Craft-Fairchild, English Department, planned and hosted the 36th annual meeting of the Midwestern Society for 18th-Century Studies Oct. 12-15 at the Minneapolis Hilton. More than 90 participants represented 60 U.S. and Canadian universities; 26 panels included papers on American and European literature, art, architecture, musicology, history and philosophy. Dr. Heather Bowman, English Department, presented her work on Samson Occom and Dr. Ann Tandy-Treiber, English Department, gave a paper on British political satire. Three graduate students from the Master of Arts in English program also gave presentations: Casie Conger on "Piety and Virtuousness in the Exemplary Colonial Child: A Discussion of the Didactic Elements of Early American Children's Literature"; Erin Huebner Gloege on "The Hapless Orphan: A Woman's Voice on History"; and Lindsay Taylor on "Beautiful Places, Threatening Spaces: The Sights in Western Indian Literature." Numerous faculty and graduate students from the English Department also chaired sessions.
- Father Jan Michael Joncas, Theology and Catholic Studies departments, is the author of an article recounting the "backstory" of his composition, "On Eagles' Wings," in the autumn issue of the journal of the Society of St. Gregory, Music and Liturgy, Vol. 32, No. 3, pages 11-12.
- Dr. Sarah Noonan, School of Education, and co-author Dr. Laurie Anderson-Sathe '99, adjunct lecturer, presented a paper at the 11th annual Values and Leadership Conference Oct. 5 in Victoria, British Columbia. The authors addressed opportunities for moral leadership during the early years of the AIDS epidemic in their paper, "And the Band Played On: Developing Ethical Leadership Through a Case Study of the AIDS Crisis."
- James Rogers, Center for Irish Studies, attended the Midwest regional meeting of the American Conference for Irish Studies Oct. 13-14 at Northern Illinois University. Rogers organized a panel on Irish autobiography in which he presented a paper, "The Seven Last Words of McCourt"; the paper examined the closing lines of Frank McCourt's 1996 memoir, Angela's Ashes. Rogers is in his second term as president of the Midwest region.
- Patricia Stankovitch, former pre-doctoral intern in UST's Personal Counseling and Career Development offices and a doctoral student in UST's Graduate School of Professional Psychology, was awarded the Counseling Center Intern Outstanding Contribution to Counseling Center Work Award by the Society of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association. Stankovich received the award at the recent APA conference in New Orleans; she was nominated by Dr. Jeri Rockett and Dr. Sarah Armstrong of Personal Counseling. Former intern Dr. Rachel Uffelman presented two programs on positive psychology and was elected communications chair of the society's College and University Counseling Center Section.
- Dr. Fred Zimmerman, professor emeritus of engineering, delivered a session, "The Status of Manufacturing, 2006" at the regional meeting of the American Society of Engineering Education Oct. 6 at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. He also delivered the keynote address, "Mining, Manufacturing and Education," to the Arrowhead Manufacturers and Fabricators Association Oct. 11 in Duluth. Zimmerman was interviewed by WCCO Radio on Oct. 16 regarding the resignation of Dr. William McGuire as CEO of UnitedHealth Group and the problems emanating from backdated stock options.
