Sports Preview: Saturday marks 100 years of Tommy-Johnnie games

The St. Thomas football team (2-1 overall, 2-0 MIAC) plays St. John's (1-2, 1-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Collegeville. It's the 100th anniversary of the first football game between the institutions. Read more about this century-old rivalry.

Two fan buses (and a third if the first two fill) will leave the arches at 11 a.m. Saturday. Buses return from St. John’s at 5:30 p.m. The bus ride is free with your St. Thomas I.D. If you get a ride to the game with friends but want to return on the bus, two-way riders have priority; you may board a bus back to UST only if there’s room.

Honorary captains for the game are, from St. John’s:

  • Larry "Zook" Iten '35, played on Saint John's undefeated, unscored-upon team of 1932
  • Jim Sexton '55, played on John Gagliardi's first Johnnie team
  • Terry Sexton '77, Jim Sexton's son, John's first "second generation" player who captained the '76 national championship team
  • Chris Palmer '96, recipient of the '95 Gagliardi Trophy.

And, from St. Thomas:

  • Tom Pacholl, '50, member of what is considered the greatest St. Thomas football team ever, the 1949 squad, which played in the Cigar Bowl, a Jan. 1 national bowl at the time. Four members of the squad were drafted by NFL teams.
  • Dick Gill '68, captain of the '67 squad. Quarterback and all conference defensive back
  • Neal Guggemos '86, All-American defensive back who played for the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings
  • Ryan Davis '96, two-time All American receiver and all-time leading receiver in St. Thomas football history.

Five other St. Thomas teams are competing this weekend as September comes to a close, with only the men's soccer team playing here on the UST campus.

  • The Tommy men’s soccer team (6-2 overall, 1-1 MIAC) plays St. Mary's (5-2-1, 2-1) Saturday at 1 p.m. on the south campus field.
  • The UST women's soccer team (7-1 overall, 3-0 MIAC) plays St. Mary's (1-4-2, 0-1-1) Saturday in Winona at 1 p.m. The Tommies have won seven in a row.
  • The UST women's cross country team competes in the University of Minnesota's Roy Griak Invitational Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the U of M golf course in Falcon Heights.
  • The UST women's golf team competes in the 36-hole Saturday-Sunday Macalester Invitational at Mississippi Dunes.
  • The Tommy men's golf team competes Saturday through Monday in the 54-hole Twin Cities Classic to be played on three different courses.
  • The UST volleyball team and men's cross country team are both off this weekend and resume competition next week.
