Recommendation Guidelines for Faculty or Staff Members

Note: Any UST faculty or staff member may nominate a student for an Aquinas Fellowship. Once nominated, if the student decides to apply for the fellowship, the nominator will be asked to submit a written recommendation as part of the application process.  Students must be juniors or seniors during the year they hold the fellowship.

We sincerely thank you for nominating this student as an outstanding example of the ideal of vocation on campus.  Since Aquinas Fellowships are competitive--two to three times as many applications are typically received for each that can be awarded--we appreciate the time you take in writing a detailed letter of recommendation.  Please write on letterhead and address some or all of the following with as much specificity as possible.  Send your completed recommendation to associate coordinator of Beyond Career to Calling, Laura Stierman, 55-S, by the recommendation deadline.

  • How long and in what capacity you have known the student
  • Why you believe the student should be considered for an Aquinas Fellowship; that is, how he or she demonstrates a keen sense of vocation as a calling from God and active discernment of that call
  • How the student's choice of major, future career plans, academic work or extracurricular activities contribute to his or her discernment of vocation
  • How the student's personal attributes or qualities will contribute to the student's role as a vocation's role model on campus.
