Chemistry Ph.D. Student, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Degree
UST Chemistry Major, Minors in Math and Physics

What are you doing now?

“I am currently a NSF Graduate Research Fellow and Springborn Chemistry Department Fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign working on a Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry.  My research seeks to understand photoinduced charge transfer dynamics in novel solar cell materials via ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy.”

What were some of the benefits of attending UST for your undergraduate career?

“During the semesters, I enjoyed the benefits of small class sizes and personal connections with my professors and classmates at UST. The Aquinas Honors Program helped me stay well-rounded through community service and opportunities to explore out-of-the-box topics such as international film and music, the philosophy of Darwin evolution, and marketing concepts in the dating world through the Honors seminars.”

What experiences during your years at UST were most meaningful to you?

“Peer tutoring for general chemistry was one of the most fulfilling experiences I had at UST.  I loved watching students grow in their abilities while at the same time keeping my chemistry and communication skills sharp.  Being involved with the executive boards of both the Chemistry Club and the German Club on campus at UST was instrumental in developing the necessary organizational skills for graduate school.”

Describe your research opportunities while at UST.

“During the summers, I explored research opportunities across the country and internationally through National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs and internships.  While I was a student at UST, I had an analytical chemistry internship at University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, a nanomaterials chemistry REU at University of Wisconsin-Madison and an international nanomaterials chemistry REU in Italy.”
