Eliason was born and raised in Texas, and graduated from Amherst College in Massachusetts. He earned a Ph.D. in Art History from Rutgers University in 2002, concentrating on European avant-garde art and theory between the World Wars. Soon thereafter, his research agenda shifted to modern typography and type design. He was the curator of "Face the Nation," a 2008 exhibition on type design and national identity which was held at Minnesota Center for Book Arts. He is currently developing a book-length study of the history of categories of type design.
