Japanese Art and Pop Culture Course Offered Fall Semester

This course will guide students through the complex, beautiful and unique aspects of Japanese art and culture that are deeply rooted in tradition and history. Students will learn the topics of theater, Anime. Manga, Graphic and Fashion design including Cosplay, zoku culture and food. The artists this class will explore are: Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Kunihoshi, Takashi Murakami (Kaikai Kiki), Yuko Shimizu, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Hayao Miyazaki, Akira Kurosawa and other artists from the Edo Period (1603-1867) to present day. The class will engage with the compelling social customs and cultural communities that have emerged as even more distinct in the globalization of Japanese popular culture.
