ARTS ON CAMPUS

The presence of art on campus is an integral component of a liberal arts education. The exhibition program at St. Thomas is an inter-disciplinary program melding history, literature, geography, religion, art, and science. Art continues to play a vital role as teacher, creative inspiration, and spiritual mediator. Students are encouraged to explore the art on their campus as well as the rich artistic opportunities at galleries, museums, and other educational institutions in the Twin Cities.

Another aspect of campus art is the acquisition of works of art for the permanent collection. The collection includes, among other works, miniature icons, stained glass, paintings, inlaid floors and outdoor sculptures.  The university is dedicated to continuing the tradition of building an art collection.

An on-going professional exhibition program began in 1992 under the leadership of Mary Towley Swanson, and has grown to be a permanent fixture of campus life. Past exhibitions include fiber art, selections of Western and American Indian Art, Sacred Arts, contemporary quilts from the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, slave quilts, book art, calligraphy, two and three dimensional works, photography and kinetic architecture.

Two annual exhibitions promote emerging, established, local and national artists, as well as alums, in an effort to expose the St. Thomas community to different genres and thematic concepts.  This program also serves to build bridges to the surrounding community as a whole. The artist reception for the fall exhibit is part of The College Art Gallery Collaborative Fall Art Tour. The Fall Art Tour is a multi-campus gallery crawl which gives visitors the opportunity to visit their neighborhood galleries and enjoy art, refreshments and music on free shuttle buses.
