Two-Minute Drill Kaiser named to D-III Aztec Bowl team University of St. Thomas defensive tackle Andy Kaiser is one of 40 senior players from Division III chosen by the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) to play in the 2001 Aztec Bowl. The D-III all-stars will face the Mexican National team on Dec. 15 in Saltillo, Mexico. Kaiser, an accounting major with a 3.83 gpa, started all 40 games in his career and helped the Tommies post a 27-9 record vs. Division III opponents during that stretch. He started on both the offensive and defensive line the last six games of 2001 and helped the Tommies close 7-3 with a third-place MIAC finish. He had five tackles for losses among his 57 tackles in 2001. Kaiser finished his career with 244 tackles, 17.5 sacks, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries, while scoring four touchdowns. He joins a select group of players to earn first-team All-MIAC honors three consecutive seasons. The Tommies finished 7-2 in the conference for third place. Repeat honorees were defensive tackle Andy Kaiser, running back Jake Barkley and wide receiver Andrew Hilliard. They were joined by quarterback Nick Ambrasas and defensive end Sean O’Leary. Five others earned honorable mention all-conference—linebacker Rick Joslin, free safety Matt Meunier, tight end Jon Learn, offensive tackle Logan Kane and center Justin Wallick. Women's hockey gets 5-0 win over Pipers Jana Jurkovich scored two goals and Nicki Magill and Tomery Stolz each had one goal and an assist as the St. Thomas women's hockey team scored a 5-0 win at Hamline Saturday in MIAC play. The Tommies, now 8-0 all time vs. the Pipers, swept the weekend series and climbed to 2-1-1 in the conference and 3-3-1 overall. UST goalie Danielle Mikolai stopped all 19 shots she faced in the shutout. Men's hockey loses 4-3 Saturday at Concordia The St. Thomas men's hockey team dropped its first conference game with a 4-3 loss Saturday at Concordia-Moorhead. The Tommies outshot the Cobbers 50-26 but allowed a pair of goals in a 33-second span in the third period to fall behind 4-2. Tony Lawrence and Matt Caven each had one goal and an assist and Drew Palmgren had one goal for UST. The Tommies (6-2 overall, 5-1 MIAC) split the weekend series with the Cobbers (3-2-1 MIAC). Brad Moore stopped 21 of 25 shots in goal for the Tommies. UST swimming teams win St. Mary’s invite The St. Thomas men's and women's swimming & diving teams claimed the team championships at last Saturday's St. Mary's Invitational. On the men's side, St. Thomas scored 680 points to top St. Mary's (526) and Hamline (117). Freshmen Dave Linn and John Kuykendall each had a hand in four firsts, and Brian Privette was in on three victories. That trio joined Kevin Schlabach on the winning 200 medley relay (1:44.90). Linn won three individual events. He won the 100 backstroke in 54.10 and broke a 17-year-old school record of 54.38 held by David Willits. He also won the 200 backstroke (1:59.12) and the 500 freestyle (4:58.41). Kuykendall won the 200 free (1:56.77) and 100 free (50.23), was second in the 50 free (23.19) and swam on the winning 200 free relay (1:36.28) with Nick Schleder, Nick Koivunen and Sean Murnane. Privette won the 200 breaststroke (2:25.20) and the 100 fly (58.81). Schlabach also won the 400 IM (4:53.37). Tom Gerhz swept the one-meter and three-meter diving (181.95 and 188.25). Jon Waataja was second in the 200 free (1:59.00). The UST women won the final race, the 200 freestyle relay, to close with 546 points and edge Hamline (532) for first place. Concordia (441), St. Catherine (319), St. Mary's (303) and Simpson (242) rounded out the field. Kristen Murray, Courtney Zurek, Melissa Stahl and Bridget Worrell timed 1:46.47 to win the closing relay and outscore fourth-place finisher Hamline by 10 points in that pivotal event. Missy Jackson won the 100 (1:12.92) and 200 breaststroke (2:40.19). Murray was second in the 200 free (2:08.22) and 100 free (58.14) and was third in the 50 free (26.43). Teresa Smock was second in the 50 free (26.30). Worrell was third in the 100 free (58.64). Zurek was third in the 100 backstroke (1:07.88). Katie Kirchgessner was third in the 200 backstroke (2:26.62). Molly Pein was third in the 400 IM (5:26.56). Stahl was third in the 200 free (2:09.69). Amy Reichow was third in the 200 breaststroke (2:40.19). Finn named men's hoops Player of the Week University of St. Thomas guard Brendan Finn was named MIAC men's basketball Player of the Week on Dec. 3. Finn scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to help the Tommies score a 79-71 MIAC win over Bethel last Saturday. It was the second time in as many games in an eight-day span that Finn scored 23 points. He made 6-of-9 3-point baskets, including five in the second half. Two of those treys fueled a 20-5 run that erased a 49-44 Bethel lead. A first-year starter, Finn leads the 4-1 Tommies this season at 17.6 points per game and has made 15-of-16 at the foul line and 21-of-37 from 3-point range. |
