May 15, 2009: TOP STORY
A group of five students received a $15,000 grant to place solar panels on the rooftops of St. Thomas during the summer.
The students claim that putting in the solar panels will help reduce university power costs, raise awareness about sustainability and provide learning opportunities for classes.
"Our project fulfills St. Thomas' mission statement, which says to think critically, act wisely and work to advance the commongood," sophomore Kamal Mohamed said. "We're thinking outside the box, looking for smart ways to save money and reducing our carbon footprint."
The group is working with the Physical Plant to research which roofs will be best for solar panels. According to the students, the roofs of the O'Shaughnessy Educational Center, the John Roach Center and the Murray-Herrick Center are possible locations.
