May 2, 2008: TOP STORY
A student who wanted to do volunteer work at Planned Parenthood to fulfill a service requirement at the St. Thomas school of law was told last week by Dean Thomas Mengler that such service would not count.
Tara Borton’s request to work at Planned Parenthood was approved April 21 by the law school’s public service board, only to have Mengler shoot it down a day later. Borton said she did not learn of either decision until Mengler sent an e-mail to everyone at the law school.
Mengler said in his e-mail that he treated “specific concerns that many from this community have voiced” as a formal appeal of the board’s decision. “I was never informed that there was an appeal,” Borton said, adding that she was upset and confused by the dean’s decision.
