Secondary Education: learn to educate today's youth and tomorrow's leaders.

What are recent grads doing now?

Recent graduates are working with children in schools in the Twin Cites metro area, across the state, across the country and internationally. Our students are teachers in public, private and charter schools. Graduates also work with students in non-traditional and non-school settings such as Upward Bound or in international schools around the world.

Study Abroad Opportunities

We have a program offered in conjunction with the University of Northern Iowa and provide the opportunity for selected candidates to complete their clinical practice (student teaching) in one of over 70 countries. We also occasionally provide a study abroad program over J-term specifically for prospective teachers. Some of our students study abroad during J-term. UMAIE has an elective course about schools and families in England. In addition, many of our students study abroad for their theology core course or courses related to their second major.

Faculty Involvement

Faculty members in our department advise students, serve on department and university committees, volunteer in their local schools, conduct research, write articles and books, give presentations, and provide leadership in state and national organizations as well as assist other universities in meeting accreditation standards. Many of our faculty are working directly with K-12 school sites. Faculty are open to working with students on school-based action research projects and last year one undergraduate student explored students’ notion of number sense through interviews.

Internship Opportunities

Our students complete three field experiences prior to student teaching (clinical practice).  Some students have the opportunity, through a collaborative project with five other private metro-area universities, to participate in a year-long residency program.  They work under the guidance of a mentor teacher and a university supervisor for a full year in math or science.  This is all part of attending a highly rated university with an excellent edification program.
