What programs of study are offered?

The University of St. Thomas offers many programs that prepare students for professional careers or advanced study.  The undergraduate program offers:

  • 91 fields of study
  •  Seven pre-professional programs

What is the process for international students to apply to St. Thomas?

The admissions process includes 3 steps:

  • Admission to an academic program
  • Completion of English proficiency
  • Financial verification

Graduate Programs:

Graduate students must follow the application procedures for the program to which they are applying.  See: www.stthomas.edu/academics for a complete listing of graduate programs.  

In addition to the application form and supporting documents required by the program you should provide:

  • Proof of English proficiency
  •  UST Financial Certification Form with supporting documents
  • SEVIS transfer form (if transferring from a U.S. college or university)

Academic admission is granted by the graduate program. The International Admissions Office will then provide the paperwork necessary to apply for your F-1 visa.


What is the application deadline?
 
Undergraduate Programs:    

Priority* deadlines for those living outside of the U.S. and incoming freshmen living in the U.S.:

            Fall Semester:                      January 15
            Spring Semester:                  January 15  

Priority* deadlines for transfer students living within the U.S.:

            Fall Semester:                       March 1
            Spring Semester:                   October 1

*St. Thomas operates on a rolling admission basis. This means that we review applications as they are received.  However, in order for International Admissions to guarantee that application materials will be reviewed in time for you to obtain your visa and arrive at St. Thomas in time for orientation, you should submit all materials before the priority deadlines.

What are the English proficiency requirements at St. Thomas?

All non-native English speakers who have not received a degree from a U.S. English-speaking institution are required to provide evidence of English proficiency. The following list contains tests and programs the University of St. Thomas accepts as evidence of English proficiency.  The minimum scores/levels are listed as follows:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
                --550 Paper-based
                --213 Computer-based
                --80 Internet- based with a minimum score of 20 for both the writing
                  and speaking sections of the test

  • MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) -- 80
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
                6.5 for undergrate programs, 6.5 for graduate programs
  • ELS (ELS Language Center)
                Completion of Level 112 (for undergraduate programs only)
  • USTEP (University of St. Thomas English Program)
                Undergraduate students who do not meet English proficiency requirements or
                who have not taken an English proficiency test may apply to USTEP.  This program
                provides the opportunity to study English intensively, adding academic university
                courses as English language skills improve.


Where can I take the TOEFL?
 
Test centers are located worldwide.  For the nearest location you may visit the TOEFL website at: www.ets.org/toefl/


Does St. Thomas require international students to take the SAT/ACT?
 

No. The only required test for an undergraduate international student is the TOEFL (or equivalent English test) if they are a non-native English speaker.


Does St. Thomas require the GMAT or other test scores for graduate students?
 
This depends on the graduate program to which you are applying.  Please contact the individual program for specific requirements.


Do you have an intensive English program?
 
Yes.  The ELS Language Center located on the St. Thomas campus provides intensive English language training for international students at all levels.

The ELS Language Center offers:

  •  12 levels of English language instruction 
  •  30 hours of class per week
  •  13 four-week sessions per year
  •  A highly advanced pre-academic preparation program
  •  Access to Multi-Media Lab
