Dr. Bill Banfield
William Banfield currently holds the Endowed Chair in Humanities and Fine Arts at St. Thomas, is director of the American Culture and Difference program and is associate professor of music teaching courses that examine black American and American popular music and culture. A native Detroiter, he received his bachelor of music from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, a master of theological studies from Boston University and a doctor of musical arts in composition from the University of Michigan. A composer of symphonic, operatic, chamber, jazz and popular works, his music has been performed by numerous orchestras and ensembles including: the Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota, San Diego, New York Virtuosi, Sacramento, Indianapolis, Savannah and National symphony orchestras. He is a frequent lecturer and in residence at college and university campuses including: Princeton, Duke, Morehouse, University of Texas (Austin) and served as a W.E.B Dubois fellow at Harvard University in 2001. He has published numerous articles and essays dealing with the documentation and role of black American artists on Fitzroy, Carlson and the University of South Carolina Press. His book, Conversations With Black American Composers, was published by Scarecrow Press
