When asked what one word best describes the music performance concentration at St. Thomas, a faculty member replied, “effective.”
Will majoring in music performance help me succeed as a musician?
A music performance faculty member responds: Preparing for a career in music performance requires a great deal of dedication and self-discipline. There is no better time or place to learn your craft or to spend a great deal of time developing your musical skills than during your undergraduate years.
We have students performing in the Metropolitan Opera, major orchestras across the United States, as well as in professional jazz and rock bands. These students have chosen a musician career path where they are now pursuing their passion and being paid for it!
Internships. Our students have the opportunity for several performance options outside of UST.
Study abroad. Music performance students often travel abroad for a semester or two, studying in major conservatories and smaller institutions. Additionally, each of our major ensembles travels internationally giving performance tours, which allows them to immerse in the native culture and serve the community through music performance.
Our performance faculty consists of international performers and conductors appearing as guest artists in countries across the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, South America, China, Japan and Australia. Several of our performance faculty members have regular engagements as performers with the Minnesota Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Opera and countless other professional ensembles, both classical and popular, throughout the twin cities.
