What can I do with a major in....?

Elementary Education

For students interested in becoming elementary school teachers, St. Thomas offers the opportunity to earn a degree with a major in elementary education and a co-major in a special field of interest within the arts and sciences. The elementary education program is designed to prepare creative, reflective and knowledgeable educators for youth of today.

The coursework in this major features an interdisciplinary approach to learning with team teaching and block scheduling of some classes. All students observe and participate in two clinical experiences in school settings for 130 hours prior to their student teaching semester. Students are also required to complete an experience in a cultural setting different from their own. These unique, off-site opportunities provide experiential learning invaluable for prospective teachers.
