Trade Fair TO Fair Trade
November 15, 2010 - January 28, 2011 in the O'Shaughnessy Educational Center lobby gallery. Reception Friday, December 4, 5-8 p.m. The gallery will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25 and Friday Nov. 26th.
Fair Trade is so much more than fair trade coffee. Artisans, many of whom are women, play a major role in Fair Trade programs, providing much-needed economic support in countries where there are both high unemployment and limited educational opportunities, but at the same time rich local traditions on which to draw. This wide spread system of exchange has moved a long way from its early days when on-site trade fairs and markets were little more than tourist bazaars, and where the artists were frequently dependent on middle-men with neither conditions nor price necessarily equitable.
We are proud to collaborate with a number of local and national organizations that practice Fair Trade. We particularly thank Designer
Lynn Barnhouse of Barnhouse Office LLC,
Friendship Bridge, and
Ten Thousand Villages, who have provided us with rich exhibition material and significant assistance.
The gallery will be closed November 25 and 26 and December 24-Jan.. 3, 2011.
